Insufficient Judicial Funding Is Likely for Minn. 7th District

By May 28, 2019 No Comments

A compromise budget bill in Minnesota would create “just one new judgeship for the 7th Judicial District” (which includes Clay, Becker, and Otter Tail counties) instead of the two judgeships requested by the Judicial Branch. The likely budget is disappointing to the chief justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court, Lorie Gildea, reports Minnesota Lawyer. Justice Gildea describes the 7th District as “under-judged” and warns legislators that keeping judges’ caseloads at their current levels will have “very real” consequences for justice. The budget could be amended during the special legislative session, but the chance of that seems low.
