New Tool for Researching Collateral Consequences of Conviction

By November 1, 2018 No Comments

A new online tool called the National Inventory of Collateral Consequences of Conviction was launched this week to help people “identify [the] obscure regulations that can be triggered by a particular conviction,” says this article. As the article also explains, “Collateral consequences are penalties buried in various laws that can limit or prohibit people convicted of crimes from finding work, accessing housing, and otherwise impact their rights and benefits that can help them to rebuild their lives.” For example, someone using the tool could search for consequences related to motor vehicle licenses in Minnesota, and the tool would list Minnesota statues related to that topic. Other topic areas include housing and residency, firearms and other recreation, employment and volunteering, and registration. The tool also allows users to search by keyword.
