North Dakota Continues Partnership with Justice Reinvestment Initiative

By July 16, 2018 No Comments

North Dakota is one of 35 states included in a recent report about the Justice Reinvestment Initiative, a partnership that includes The Pew Charitable Trusts, the U.S. Justice Department, and other organizations. The reform efforts of the Initiative “aim to improve public safety and control taxpayer costs by prioritizing prison space for people convicted of serious offenses and investing some of the savings in alternatives to incarceration that are effective at reducing recidivism.” Policy reforms that North Dakota has undertaken include establishing presumptive probation for some offenses, establishing or expanding geriatric or medical parole, and forming an oversight council. Minnesota is not among the participants in the Initiative.
