Double Jeopardy Issue Coming to U.S. Supreme Court

By July 3, 2018 No Comments

This fall the U.S. Supreme Court will hear a case about “whether the double jeopardy clause of the Fifth Amendment bars states and the federal government from separately trying the same person for the same criminal offense,” reports CNN. Currently, separate prosecutions of this kind are generally allowed by the Court, though many states have their own laws that “prohibit the trial of individuals who have been convicted for the same offense by the federal government.” Minnesota is not one of these states.
