Evidence Suppressed Due to Limitations of Google Translate

A Kansas court recently ruled that Google Translate is not “a reliable enough interpreter to justify sending a man to prison,” reports Business Insider. A Kansas state trooper had used Google Translate to ask a driver for consent to search his vehicle, and the driver later argued through his defense attorneys that he didn’t understand the trooper’s request. “According to a recording made by the police car’s camera, there were multiple times when [the trooper’s] questions produced ‘nonsensical translations,'” including the key question about searching the vehicle. In addition, professional interpreters offered testimony in the case that Google’s tool isn’t appropriate for translating complete conversations.
