Fingerprint Evidence Questioned in 100-Plus Cases

By August 18, 2017 No Comments

A public defender’s office in Florida has found 104 cases (and counting) that may have been substantially affected by a mistake-prone sheriff’s office employee, says a recent news report. The employee was a fingerprint examiner who “transferred to a new position after a supervisor rated his job knowledge and work quality as ‘below standards’… and later resigned.” According to the employee’s personnel file, “errors had been made for years before prosecutors were made aware — potentially affecting more than 2,500 cases.” The public defender’s office is still considering its next moves for the 104 cases and for other files that have yet to be reviewed.
